Dailies Total 1 Multifocal Contact Lenses

Dailies Total 1 Multifocal Contact Lenses capitalize on Alcon’s water gradient technology to create a lens that is especially good for dry eye sufferers who also need a lens that will allow them to focus at near as well as in the distance.  In general, contact lenses are made from a single type of material, which will have the same properties throughout the lens.  What is different about the water-gradient technology of the Dailies Total 1 and Dailies Total 1 Multifocal is the way the properties of the lens change from the core to the surface of the lens.

Dailies Total 1 Multifocal Contact Lenses

Alcon, the maker of this lens, reports that the core of this lens is about 33% water content, but this changes to approximately 80% water content at the surface of the lens and nearly 100% water content at the outer surface of the lens where it contacts the eye.  This change in material allows the core of the lens to maintain lens structure and oxygen permeability, while the outer layers provide a high water content and lubrication as the lens interacts with the ocular surface.

While this water-gradient technology is used in the standard, spherical Dailies Total 1, Alcon has also combined it with an optical design similar to their Air Optix Aqua Multifocal to create the Dailies Total 1 Multifocal contact lens.  This daily disposable lens allows for near and far vision without the use of reading glasses.  As with any bifocal contacts, there may need to be some compromises made to optimize either the distance or near aspect of focus, but this type of lens is a great way to be free of glasses, especially when you’re out and about, exercising, or doing other activities.
